Circuit Breaker provides a comprehensive re-engagement intervention for young people at risk of exclusion or poor attendance. The programme includes a planning day in school, a three-night residential with activities emphasising cooking, teamwork and outdoor challenges, and a reintegration phase with school follow-up.
Circuit Breaker
Circuit Breaker is a five-day re-engagement programme for young people who are beginning to struggle with school, attendance, behaviour, confidence or transition.
The week starts in school, where the group helps plan the residential, including meals, budgeting, responsibilities and what they want to get from the experience. From Tuesday to Friday, young people stay together in small-group accommodation and take part in a mix of practical life skills, outdoor challenge, teamwork and shared responsibility.
The aim is not simply to take young people away from school. It is to give them space to step out of familiar patterns, experience success in a different environment and build stronger relationships with the adults supporting them.
Throughout the programme, young people are encouraged to take responsibility, solve problems, cook and live together, communicate, lead and reflect on their choices. The week finishes with a clear plan for returning to education, followed by support and feedback for the school.
Circuit Breaker is designed for small, targeted cohorts and can be used as an early intervention for young people at risk of disengagement, exclusion or becoming NEET.
